NetPsy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
History
NetPsy was founded by Marlene M. Maheu, Ph.D. in 1996 in collaboration with Dr. Robert Zenhausen from St. John's University. With much good will and colleageality, Dr. Zenhausen's arranged for St. John's University to host NetPsy at no charge for server space, setup and maintenance services. Soon thereafter, Pioneer Development Resources, Inc. acquired ownership of NetPsy. The NetPsy Listserv operations were adminstered by Dr. Maheu with the assistance of Mr. Storm King, who was a non-paid volunteer who also generously volunteered his services as a non-owner, co-administrator. When the list became threatened by unruliness of some members, Mr. King was replaced by Dr. Jerry Quimby as co-admin. He was quickly joined by an anonymous co-admin with inside expertise of St. John's Listserv operations. They have remained active co-admins with Dr. Maheu at the helm ever since. A careful reading of the archives of Netpsy will reveal much about the early interactions of a large group of mental health professionals as they tried to both learn about online interactions and practice their budding online professionalism with each other.
These early online interactions led to much constructive debate, writing and professional presentations at conferences. For Dr. Maheu, three book contracts were completed over the next few years. Two were academic books and one was developed for the general public. See this page for details of these books.
