How To Have An Affordable Divorce

Question: We are on a limited income and probably cannot afford divorce mediation. What are some affordable divorce options for us?

When you get divorced you can work towards an agreement on your own, take it to court, or hire a mediator. Most states have policies which allow the courts to refer you to a mediator who will see you for a low fee or on a sliding scale based on income. In many cases the initial consultation is free. These mediators are usually required to have a substantial amount of training, and often they are the same people who charge higher fees in the community.

Be Proactive About Getting An Affordable Divorce

  • If your divorce is currently before a judge, tell him or her that you are interested in mediation and ask about a referral.
  • If you are not involved with the court right now, then call the court and ask if they can refer you to a mediator who will work with you at a reduced fee.

A limited income should not be a barrier in most parts of the United States when getting a divorce, so having an affordable divorce is possible
