When you get divorced you can work towards an agreement on your own, take it to court, or hire a mediator. Most states have policies which allow the courts to refer you to a mediator who will see you for a low fee or on a sliding scale based on income. In many cases the initial consultation is free. These mediators are usually required to have a substantial amount of training, and often they are the same people who charge higher fees in the community.
Be Proactive About Getting An Affordable Divorce
- If your divorce is currently before a judge, tell him or her that you are interested in mediation and ask about a referral.
- If you are not involved with the court right now, then call the court and ask if they can refer you to a mediator who will work with you at a reduced fee.
A limited income should not be a barrier in most parts of the United States when getting a divorce, so having an affordable divorce is possible
